You are probably well aware of some of the major benefits of living on ocean property; the value of your investment is guaranteed to increase, for example, and you also have easy access to some of the best recreation available to mankind. And then of course, theres the view...

What many people dont realize about oceanfront property is that it may actually help to increase your health overall, in certain ways. Lets take a look at some theories on why it is about living on oceanfront property that might help to up your standard of healthy living.

Reducing stress

There is no doubt about it, easy access to the ocean and all that goes with it is a proven way to decrease the amount of stress in your life. Just think about the stereotypical relaxation tapes you might have come across or even used; one of the most popular, features the sound of waves crashing against the shore, the occasional call of sea birds in the air. The sounds of the ocean are some of the most relaxing that can be thought of, and with ocean front property they are all around you!

More opportunity for exercise

Oceanfront property means a world of recreational opportunities right outside your front door. You can go for long walks along the beach, climb over the ocean rocks and explore, swim or surf in the water. Long stretches of beach are ideal for jogging; they even help to burn extra calories without the shock on the knees that a treadmill or other hard surface running will bring.

Minimal air pollutants

Finally, the wind blowing off the ocean will always mean that the air above your property, and all around you, will be cleaner than that further inland, even if you live in a pretty clean area. Theres just not enough opportunity for smog or smoke to hang around before it gets blown inland!

If you are fortunate enough to own and live on oceanfront property, you are holding title to what is truly a dream living condition. Great potential for more value, recreational opportunities galore, an incredible view, and even health benefits are all a part of the package with oceanfront living!

Aromatherapy May Improve Mood But Will Not Make You Better

Posted in Unspecified
Pharmacy Store

A recent US study on a small group of people found that aromatherapy oils had no physiological effect although they may improve mood for some people.

The study is the work of researchers at Ohio State University and appears in the April issue of the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology.

Described by a doctor speaking on the CBS News Early Show on Tuesday as one of the few studies to take "a very scientific look at aromatherapy", the study found that the two most popular aromatherapy oils, lemon and lavender, failed to show any improvement in wound healing, immune status, blood pressure, stress hormones, or pain control.

Lemon oil did show a small effect in mood improvement, but lavender oil was even less effective than water, said the researchers who conducted three psychological tests as well as examining physiological effects.

Lead author of the study and professor of psychiatry and psychology at Ohio State University, Dr Janice Kiecolt-Glaser, and colleagues, looked for physiological evidence that the two oils went beyond increasing pleasure. Aromatherapy is a large industry that markets oils as having health benefits, but there is little scientific evidence of this.

Kiecolt-Glaser said:

"We all know that the placebo effect can have a very strong impact on a person's health but beyond that, we wanted to see if these aromatic essential oils actually improved human health in some measurable way."

Lemon and lavender are the two most used scents in aromatherapy, and recent research also selected these to study.

The researchers invited 56 healthy male and female volunteers and screened them to find out how good their sense of smell was. Some of the participants believed aromatherapy was effective while the others had no opinion one way or the other.

The participants attended three half day events where they had cotton balls with lemon oil, lavender oil or distilled water taped below their noses while they were examined using a range of physiological and psychological tests.

Their blood pressure and heart rate was monitored during the sessions, and they also gave blood samples. Ability to heal was assessed by a standard test where sticky tape is applied and then removed repeatedly on an area of skin, and reaction to pain was measured from immersing their feet in ice cold water.

The volunteers also completed three standard psychological tests to assess mood and stress at three times during each session. They were also asked to express their reaction to the experience, and their use of positive and negative words in their narrative was assessed.

Several biochemical markers were tested in the blood samples to establish changes in immune and endocrine system. These included the cytokines Interleukin-6 and Interleukin-10, and the stress hormones cortisol, norepinephrine and other catacholomines.

The results showed that while lemon oil clearly enhanced mood, lavender oil had no such effect, and neither smell made any impact on any of the measures for stress, pain control and wound healing.

The study is one of the most comprehensive pieces of research to look at aromatherapy, but the human body is "infinitely complex" said co-author Dr William Malarkey, professor of internal medicine at Ohio State University.

"If an individual patient uses these oils and feels better, there's no way we can prove it doesn't improve that person's health," he said.

"But we still failed to find any quantitative indication that these oils provide any physiological effect for people in general," added Malarkey.

Fellow co-author Dr Ronald Glaser, a professor of molecular virology, immunology and medical genetics at Ohio State, said that the wound healing experiment measured how fast the skin repaired itself, and a lot of things have to happen in the body for that to take place:

"We measured a lot of complex physiological interactions instead of just a single marker, and still we saw no positive effect," said Glaser.

Speaking on the CBS Early Show, Dr Roshini Raj of New York University Medical Center said that the effect of lemon on mood "shouldn't be underestimated", saying it was a "pretty good thing" if just smelling something can make a person feel better. Perhaps there is a strong placebo effect, she said, where people believe aromatherapy works but there is no real physiological effect.

She suggested that perhaps some people feel less stressed when they use aromatherapy, and this helps them deal with certain medical conditions.

Raj pointed out that the study was relatively small, and therefore "you can't say aromatherapy doesn't work for everyone".

The message appears to be that while it probably won't do any harm, and maybe worth a try, don't expect aromatherapy to replace needed medications.

"Olfactory influences on mood and autonomic, endocrine, and immune function."

The Facts About Weight Loss Without Exercise

Posted in Unspecified
Pharmacy Store
The experts say that you need to exercise for weight loss. There are a lot of diet pills, diet supplements, fad diets, and mind-blowing weight loss claims out there which seem to claim otherwise. Is it possible to experience permanent healthy weight loss without exercise?

Of all the articles and ads about weight loss and weight loss products, you will notice that many of them seem to be saying that weight loss without exercise is what they have to offer. They will tell you about some diet pill, or perhaps a diet, which is going to take the weight off without you lifting a finger...other than to unscrew the cap.

So here's the question: Can somone really lose weight simply by adjusting their diet? So many people feel that they do not have the time to exercise, or feel they lack the energy to exercise, or just plain don't want to. It would be great if all they had to do was take some pill or eat some specific diet and the weight would go away, right?

Now, my problem is that when I think of, or advise someone on, weight loss, I automatically throw in adjectives like "healthy" and "permanent". I'm not really in touch with the concept of using a diet to lose a few pounds to get back into last year's clothes or to look good at the high school reunion. I tend to think of losing weight as a step to the point where you achieve your weight loss goal and enter the realm of weight management. At this point, you are living a healthy lifestyle of combined physical activity and proper nutrition and are able to enjoy life to the max...for a good many years to come!

"Yeah, Don, that's great, but I'm one of the first group of people you talked about. I just want to lose weight and don't want to mess with exercise. Heck, man, I'm so overweight and pooped all the time that just thinking about exercise scares me. Just tell me what diet pill to take or diet to follow so that I can get my weight down, look good, feel good about myself, and enjoy life like you say!"

Well, there are people who want to be rich but who don't want to "mess with" saving, or making wise purchasing decisions, or working hard, either. Whatever we really want in life usually has some sort of price tag attached, and, as the saying goes, we usually, "get what we paid for".

To throw in another old saying, anything worth doing is worth doing well.

To get back to the weight loss without exercise issue, let's look at a couple of facts.

1. Diets do not work as far as permanent or healthy weight loss is concerned.

2. Permanent, healthy weight loss is commonly achieved through a combination of exercise and proper nutrition.

3. While there are diet products and supplements which can enhance the effects of any weight loss program, they very seldom do the trick by themselves for most people.

Let's start with that last one.

Start by reading the labels or advertising literature of most diet pills and other weight loss supplements. Somewhere you will usually find a statement that will say something like "when used with regular exercise and a sensible nutrition program". To put it another way, maybe taking that diet pill or supplement will HELP with weight loss IF it is taken in conjunction with some other weight loss program.

At the moment, the Alli diet and fat loss pill, is the only federally apporved weight loss pill. The manufacturers of even this "successful" weight loss product let you know that you should be doing taking additional steps to experience effective weight loss. Testing of that pill, one of the most effective available, show that weight loss with the pill alone will be minimal unless it is used with a program of regular exercise and proper nutrition.

Let's face it. If there WAS one diet pill that you could take and then sit around watching TV, eating ice cream, and drinking beer...AND still lose weight and be healthy, there would not be so many different diet pills claiming to do the trick!

Okay, I started with the last fact, so let's jump around and deal with the first fact next.

Diets per se do not work for permanent, healthy weight loss.

When you suddenly decrease the calories you regularly have been feeding your body, it senses a starvation situation (built in survival trait) and lowers its basic metabolic rate. In other words, it adjusts itself to function with fewer calories. This could be a good deal except for one problem. When you go back to your old eating habits, eating the same amount of calories will store more fat on your body than it used to.

This is the reason that going on and off diets is very likely to cause weight gain, rather than weight loss! It's called yo-yo dieting.

Also, an extreme reduction in nutriton also means an accompanying extreme reduction in vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, fats (needed for life), phytonutrients, and other nutritional factors normally required for health, energy, and long life. You can lose wieght but in the process endanger health and lower the energy available to live life with joy.

Just to throw in another monkey wrench, once your body has adapted to its new diet and adjusted its basic metaolism, the weight loss will cease. This will usually occur after only a few pounds of fat have been lost. To lose still more weight, you will again need to decrease your food intake even more, or perhaps decide it's not worth it and take a look at the second fact I listed.

Test after test and study after study has demonstrated beyond a doubt that the most effective weight loss program is one that includes regular, moderate exercise and healthy eating and living habits. The exercise does NOT have to be extreme, although overall results will usually be directly related to the amount of effort expended.

Most of us are NOT going to wind up looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger or Cory Everson unless we exercise and eat like they do!

However; regular, moderate exercise can burn calories and build lean muscle tissue which will continue to use up excess calories and burn fat even when we are not exercising. It will raise energy levels, make daily life easier, help elevate mood and fight depression, and will help protect us against a host of degenerative diseases. It has been shown to delay and mitigate the effects of aging, and has been shown a potent protector against many conditions including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, and many forms of cancer.

Healthy eating does not necessarily mean "dieting". Healthy eating involves such things as proper selection of foods, paying attention to portion sizes, and changing a few eating habits...including that great American pastime...snacking!

I used the term "healthy eating and living" because such things as getting the proper amount of sleep, having fun, and having friends can also contribute to health in general and weight loss in particular.

Is weight loss without exercise possible?

Sure! Millions of people throughout history have gotten very thin before they starved to death!

Millions more have simply combined exercise with healthy eating and living habits to experience permanent, healthy weight loss and have enjoyed a long and happy life as a result.

Weight Loss: Why Hypnosis Really Does Help

Posted in Unspecified
Pharmacy Store

If you are one of the many millions of people who struggle to maintain the proper weight, you are probably aware of the generally accepted groundrules of weight management.

The rules say that you need just two things to keep to the correct weight: proper diet and exercise. These two factors are expounded in books and programs worldwide that are the center of a billion-dollar business.

Unfortunately, that business is failing, at least in having an effect, if not in making money for its principals. The proportion of the population who are overweight, and in fact obese, is growing at an alarming rate.

And it's not just the United States, by the way. Obesity worldwide is such a concern that the World Health Organization has coined a new word "Globesity" to describe what they see as a global problem.

For many of us, "proper diet and exercise" is not a simple or an easy answer - instead, it represents a total and challenging lifestyle change. Resistance to the required change in personal eating and exercise habits and practices is what dooms many individual attempts to lose weight.

In other words, proper diet and exercise are only half of what is required to maintain a healthy weight - the physical half. It's the other half: the mental and emotional challenges, resistance to change, and difficulty in breaking habits and routines, which keep us overweight.

And, seeing that "proper diet and exercise" is fairly simple in concept, and it's the emotional and habit issues that are the sticking point, it's therefore those latter issues that we should be focussing on. This is where hypnosis can help.

Let me comment, by the way, that all this is the reason why programs like Jenny Craig, Weightwatchers, and even Overeaters Anonymous are so effective. Using meetings and counselors to allow you to interact with others, they address your emotional needs as much as the physical aspects of diet. However, the use of hypnosis can be a lot cheaper, faster, and easier.

For example, most of us have become accustomed (conditioned) to eating particular types and amounts of food on a particular schedule. It's not easy to eat less, or differently. Our tummies are used to feeling full, our brains are conditioned to eat at particular times, and we are used to particular foods, often those which are "not good" for us.

Exercise is also not that easy to insert into one's daily routine. It seems straightforward but humans are strongly resistant to it. Plus, in today's society, who has the time?

This is where hypnotic techniques can help. Hypnotherapy is about habit reconditioning and behavior modification. A course of hypnotherapy can help you modify your existing behaviors and habit patterns (in other words, the mental and emotional challenges) so that you more easily adjust to the new lifestyle required to achieve the two physical cornerstones of weight management - diet and exercise.

But, hypnosis or not, you still have to embrace the diet and exercise part. Hypnosis helps you do this.

Now, here is the good news - a good hypnotherapy program can greatly influence good weight management behavior and make a substantial difference in the adjustments required to a new diet and exercise regime.

First, hypnosis can teach you relaxation. Many of the triggers that cause people to overeat are caused by stress-related factors. The kind of relaxation learned during hypnosis techniques can greatly reduce stress, making the adjustment to new habits much easier.

Next, a good hypnotherapist will work with you to identify triggers. These are that are sabotaging good diet and exercise habits.

You may be one of those people who find yourself standing looking inside the fridge, just looking for something to eat. Your hypnotherapist will help you change those behaviors so that you only snack at fixed times, and then you only eat something good for you, such as a protein snack to prevent hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar.

We describe certain foods as comfort foods - food which is tasty to eat and filling, and generally bad for you. For some people, their entire diet is comfort food. Maybe their parents fed them comfort food at a young age when they were upset.

Whatever the reason, those bad eating habits are now engrained. Your hypnotherapist can give you suggestions to change your automatic responses when you have an upset or a "stress moment".

In fact, hypnosis can help alleviate the pangs or cravings that we tend to feel even when we are not hungry, and do not need nourishment. Often we eat because we are just used to eating at a certain time, or because our tummies are used to feeling full.

The problem with this is that over the years, we need to eat more and more to maintain that "full" feeling. Hypnosis can reverse this behavior to allow you to let go of the hunger pangs at all the wrong times.

Your hypnotherapist can also help you to change your mental patterns so that you feel better about yourself. Self-image is a big issue when it comes to weight and dieting issues.

Dieting is not difficult, as it happens. There is a huge variety of different options, including for those who want bigger portions, those who like particular foods, and so forth. It's making the adjustment to stick to a plan that makes the difference, and that's the key to success.

So, what's the game plan? First, when entering into any form of diet, exercise, or other lifestyle change, it's always a good idea to visit your doctor and get his advice on what to do and the limits. For example, if you have not exercised forever and you are 50 pounds overweight, it's not a good idea to suddenly try running 3 miles a day. You need to start slowly. So, get a diet and exercise plan from your doctor.

Next, understand that you have to take it slowly. Weight loss of 1-2 pounds a week is a standard goal, and this requires both diet and exercise. You can probably lose more in the short term by taking more extreme measures like starvation dieting. However, this will not last.

Second, understand that even with hypnosis, you are going to have to exert a little bit of will power. Hypnosis will help you greatly by making you aware of the urges and reframing your automatic responses. However, at some point you are going to have to just say "no". It's at this point that a hypnotic refresher, such as an MP3 recording, will be very effective.

There are many "Hypnosis weight loss" programs and CDs available. The best kind of program, however, is one which offers personalized individual sessions, backed up by recordings to be listened to between the sessions. Hypno To Go provides such a program, for example. Individual hypnotherapy sessions, which can be performed over the phone, are directed towards your specific weight loss issues, and can also be tailored to support the specific diet and exercise program that you have chosen or that your doctor has recommended.

Finally, know that you are not alone. Millions of people are overweight and even obese as we stated above. However, this does not mean that you can not make a difference for yourself.

Take the right steps, take them slowly, and commit to the long term, and a return to a lower weight will surely be in your future. I wish you the very best of success with your weight loss endeavors.

Omega-3 fatty acids are unsaturated fats found in some fish such as salmon and herring and in smaller amounts in eggs and chicken. This discovery is an important step towards developing dietary fat guidelines for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Current dietary recommendations evolved from the 1950??™s emphasis on reducing saturated fat intake to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The study is published March 7th, 2008 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

???Omega 3 fatty acids are important for the baby??™s developing eyes and brain,??? says Dr. Sheila Innis, the study??™s principal investigator, head of the nutrition and metabolism program at the Child & Family Research Institute at BC Children??™s Hospital, and professor, department of pediatrics, University of British Columbia.

???During pregnancy and breastfeeding, fat consumed by the mum is transferred to the developing baby and breastfed infant, and this fat is important for the baby??™s developing organs. Our next task is to find out why the typical North American diet puts mothers at risk. Then we can develop dietary recommendations to help women consume a nutritious diet that promotes optimal health for mums and babies.???

The researchers found that the women who ate lots of meat and little fish were deficient in omega-3 fatty acids, and their babies didn??™t do as well on eye tests as babies from mothers who weren??™t deficient. The results were noticeable as early as two months of age. The study is ongoing as the researchers intend to follow the children??™s development until four years of age.

For the study, the researchers recruited 135 pregnant women and randomly assigned them to either a group that took an omega-3 fatty acid supplement or one that took a placebo. All the women continued eating their regular diets. The supplement added the equivalent of two fatty fish meals per week, an amount that the researchers estimated would prevent deficiency. The researchers tested the women??™s blood samples at 16 and 36 weeks of pregnancy and measured the amount of DHA (docasohexaenoic acid), a type of omega-3 fatty acids that??™s known to be important for brain and eye function.

After the babies were born, the researchers did vision tests to evaluate the infants??™ ability to distinguish lines of different widths. It??™s an innovative way of evaluating neurological maturity in babies who are unable to talk. Since the eyes are connected to the brain, they reflect the brain??™s development.

The aim of this study was to contribute to a growing body of knowledge that focuses on the dietary needs of pregnant and breastfeeding women. More research is needed to identify recommended daily amounts of omega 3 fatty acids.
